SteriPEN Freedom Water Purifier

SteriPEN Freedom Water Purifier

Purifying water, when you’re out in the wilderness, can be an aggravating process. Depending on what technology you have on hand, you’re either pumping, filtering, mixing chemicals, or keeping track of test trips and complicated timetables for proper water treatment. And many treatments can create a funky aftertaste in your canteen. The SteriPEN Freedom Water Purifier is the no-fuss, 60-second answer to your water purification needs.

Dip the SteriPEN Freedom into your canteen and it eradicates 99.9% of all bacteria, viruses, and protozoa in only 48 seconds with a germicidal UV light. Once everything dangerous has been zapped, a green indicator light flicks on letting you know your water is safe to drink. The process is impossibly simple: dip, wait less than a minute, and the light turns green. It’s safe to drink.

The Freedom’s built in battery is rechargeable via an AC adapter or USB port, meaning you can simply plug it in to your laptop and won’t need to worry about carrying extra batteries while you’re out in the field. It’s small enough to fit in a shirt pocket, and can sterilize up to an entire liter of water at a time (if you use two, consecutive treatments). The light source is good for up to 8,000 water treatments and leaves no aftertaste behind.

The only drawback: SteriPEN suggests filtering cloudy or sediment-filled water prior to treatment so that the UV light can properly penetrate what you’re about to drink. You don’t want that stray Cryptosporidia to hide behind a clump of sand.
